Last night we went to Meltem's parents' place to welcome her mom and aunt back from their recent 11-day trip to Russia. This was the first time Meltem's mom had been outside Turkey since coming here from Yugoslavia (Kosovo, in fact) in the 1950s, so we were really happy for her. The trip was basically a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg, and both ladies were very pleased with the whole thing.
We almost saw them, too. Meltem and her mom regularly communicated by cell phone or text message, and so we knew the travelers' itinerary. One day we knew they were going to be on an island called Kizhi, home to a remarkable 18th-century church with 22 domes. The building is made entirely out of carved and joined wood – not a single nail in the whole darn thing. Anyway, it turns out the place not only has a website, but also a continuously-updated webcam. So we hovered over the web page hoping to catch a glimpse of our intrepid travelers (and even thought we had 'em at one point, but it turned out to be a false alarm). Talk about a small world!
